Martta Tuomaala (b. 1983) is a visual artist (MA) based in Helsinki, specializing in various forms of film, video art, and installation. Her works navigate the intersection of fiction and documentary. Over the past decade, Tuomaala’s art has primarily focused on themes related to work culture and labor issues. She has spent years working in low-wage sectors, and the experiences she gained have influenced the subjects of her works, emphasizing workers’ rights. A satirical approach and strong physical expression are prominent in her recent productions, although the form and tone of her works vary depending on the topic.
Tuomaala currently serves on the board of AV-Arkki, and she is also one of the founders of the Kenno Filmi cooperative, which produces film and media art. Her works have been widely exhibited in museums, galleries, and festivals both in Finland and internationally, including the 5th Kochi-Muziris Biennale (2022–2023) in Kochi, ACC Gallery (2021) in Weimar, Tartu Art Museum (2020) in Tartu, EKKM (2020) in Tallinn, and the Survival Kit Festival in Riga. She also represented Finland at the Venice Biennale in 2019 as part of the Miracle Workers Collective.
