ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
For Gallery Katariina’s “Invisible human” exhibition, I have created nature-themed watercolors inspired by the countryside near my home. My previous paintings, which focused on urban subjects, provided immediate rewards alongside contemporary themes, allowing for the easy incorporation of humor and social commentary. However, painting nature with watercolors presents a different challenge. It has been done countless times and can easily become kitsch in the hands of a novice watercolorist. One must approach the subject thoughtfully, considering what I truly wish to convey.
The nearby forests, with their dense thickets, are familiar to me, yet they have never been the focus of my artistic interest before. The subjects of observation-based photography are incredibly diverse and constantly influenced by changing light and weather conditions. When painting, I realize that I am composing nature, whether it be in a still life, a portrait, an interior, or a landscape. I have also refrained from photographing mere material fragments. In this context, I define nature as anything where the direct influence of humanity is not visible.
As a person living in contemporary times, I recognize that nature carries a political dimension for me
however, in these works, it serves more as a means of expressing my watercolor practice. My painting is grounded in observation, often conducted away from the studio. I perceive this as a dialogue between myself and the world. Watercolors capture the painter’s state of being—whether relaxed, tense, or unhurried—through the brushwork. The techniques I prefer leave little room for correction, necessitating a fearless approach to the work. This immediacy is invigorating amidst my other professional activities. I am grateful to have returned to painting and feel that I now possess the experience and confidence to create from my own perspective.
