Ville Mäkikoskela

Sculptor

Ville Mäkikoskela (b. 1975) is a sculptor who is fascinated by the wonders of everyday life and the whims of chance. “I am a sculptor because the “real-ness” of sculpture, spatiality and embodiment, a figure equal to one’s own body, in the process of making and in the finished works, speak to me. In my works I mostly deal with the human being, being human and the human place in the world. There is little direct human depiction in my work, but even so, I hope you can feel the human presence in my works. As an artist, I am a tourist, an experimenter. I work in an idealistic way. First comes the idea, then I try to choose the right materials, the right working methods and the right formal language to support the idea, to arrive at the finished sculpture. I want the chosen way of working to be of the same flesh as the idea and to be visible in the end result. My works are sometimes comic, sometimes tragic, on their best days tragic-comic. And there is hope.”
