Evi Rinkinen’s exhibition Hex Upon Thee explores the unity of illustration and craft. Themes of melancholy, superstition and escapism are central in the exhibition’s embroidery works and aquarelles. Rinkinen, who is specialized in editorial illustration, works mainly digitally. However, while preparing her solo exhibition she has had the chance to immerse herself in slow working methods.
The illustrator’s love for light, organic shapes and playfulness can be seen regardless of the medium. The subtle shades and lively lines invite to take a closer look, and the sweet softness often has a fascinating flip side. The materiality of the works in the exhibition offers the illustrator as well as a gallery visitor, a welcome respite in a fast-paced world.
Evi Rinkinen (b. 1994 in Jyväskylä) is a Helsinki-based illustrator, designer and a visual artist. Her background is in textile and apparel design, from which she has gradually moved into illustration and visual art.
