The Finnish Comics Society was founded in 1971 in conjunction with the International Cartoon Exhibition at the Amos Anderson Art Museum. Since its foundation, the Comics Society has been an association of comics creators, readers, collectors, critics, translators and researchers. It acts as an expert organisation, informing the general public as well as the social and cultural authorities of the comics sector. The Society publishes the Sarjainfo magazine, which appears four times a year and is the only magazine dedicated to the comics industry in Finland. The Helsinki Comics Festival, held in September, is the largest comics event in the Nordic countries. The annual Puupäähattu prize recognises outstanding comic artists.
The society also runs the Comics Centre, a cultural space that organises education and events for children, young people and adults.
